Energy Masters believes that no home energy audit is complete without a thorough evaluation of your home’s safety. While safety covers several factors in your home, we pay specific attention poisonous gases like Carbon Monoxide and Radon.
These colorless, odorless gases are two of the most hazardous threats to a home that is energy deficient. Audited homes that show poor results in their energy audit often show signs of carbon monoxide leakage, possible radon threats or a combination of the two.
500 people die each year from Carbon Monoxide poisoning and many more are rendered sick. Energy Masters always checks gas-fired appliances during home inspections. Gas stoves are the primary culprit of carbon monoxide emissions in the home, so Energy Masters checks the stoves and the individual burners to ensure they are not emitting dangerous amounts of Carbon Monoxide.
According to the EPA, Radon is the second largest cause of lung cancer after smoking. Radon is the product of natural uranium decay and is present in many soil types but is especially prevalent in granitic soils such as we have in the Sierra Nevada. It’s estimated that 40% of all homes in the Sierra Nevada have elevated levels of this odorless and colorless gas. The only way to know for sure if your home is healthful is to test.
Initial charcoal Radon test kits are inexpensive and easy to use. They are available from some hardware stores, on-line and sometimes provided by public agencies. The best time to test for Radon is in the winter when your home is closed up. Until the end of February, the Washoe County Extension Service is providing test kits free of charge to Washoe County residents.
Keeping Your Home Safe
Energy Masters provides you with a full safety assessment to defend your home against these elements, including the most important factor to this defense: installing alarms. Carbon Monoxide detectors are now a required feature in newly built homes, but most older homes are not regulated and do not have them installed.
Whether you need consulting on the proper detector to purchase or you need full installation of Carbon Monoxide detectors and Radon test kits, Energy Masters can help you keep your home safe.
